Aren't you suppose to forgive?

in the past when I was younger in the teens, I had a friend of the families have stolen from the house and I know he regrets it, but I have found the person who did it and I have spoken to the persons sisters. And I don't bother saying anything about the incident. But I have told my parents who I found on FB and They didn't care and they got snotty about it. Like she found th person who robbed us. Thats was so long ago. can't you forgive the person? They are church people. They are christians and I think noone should actually judge only GOD is the one who judges.
